Andrew prepares basketball star Lamar Hayes for his first playoff game on Saturday. Lamar has a history with one of the referees and he's having some relationships issues with his actress girlfriend.
Great episode, Chris! And this line really resonated with me: "I understand the focus that anger can give." So true...but not always in our best interest. I think the Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios lives off this. But it's also cost him games, fines and sponsorships. I do like him though, because he's been open about some mental health struggles he's had. Humanizes him, in my mind.
Hello Mike! Yes Nick Kyrgios is a great example of someone who uses their anger for their sport. He’s known as the bad boy of tennis. So may athletes are taught to harness that anger on the field but it does so much damage to their personal lives if they don’t have a way to deescalate. Lamar’s passion is something the fans and his teammates love but when it causes him to cuss out the refs that only hurts the team and his wallet with fines. This is not unlike many players who passions run high. We love that but at the same time sometimes that passion creates a stupid foul. So knowing when to turn it on and when to turn it off is very difficult and a master class in self-knowledge. Meditation and mindfulness exercises and learning how to sit in that place between stimulus and response is key to maintaining poise in the heat of battle. Thank for your comments always full of insight and so glad you’re enjoying the season.
